The Gorj County is divided into 70 administrative unites, managed by a Major, assisted by a Local Council, elected by universal poll, for 4 years. There are 70 localities and Tg – Jiu is the town residence of the county. There are also 5 towns: Bumbesti – Jiu, Tg – Carbunesti, Motru, Novaci, Ticleni and other villages.
The Gorj County counts about 397.238 inhabitants and is the 30rd of the 41 counties of Romania. The structure of population depending on residence is:

and distinct territory.
The beauty of the landscape is completed by customs and traditions,
of which:
- the fair of Polovragi (15 – 20 july);
- the annual fair of Dragotesti (22 – 27 july);
- the annual fair of Tismana (15 August);
- the annual fair of Sf. Petru, in Campeni (29 june);
- the climbing of muttons to the mountain in may, in Novaci (may);
- the descent of muttons from the mountains, in Baia de Fier
(september);
- the weekly fairs in Novaci, Capreni, Alimpesti.
In Gorj county there are 41 cultural institutions, 2 performance institutions, 9 cultural offices, 61 clubs, 69 rural and urban libraries, 11 museum, 10 cinema.
